A new era dawns in Happy Valley, and with it comes immense pressure and central questions that will define Penn State’s season.
As the Nittany Lions step onto West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium to open their 2026 campaign against Marshall, they do so under the leadership of a brand-new coaching staff and an overhauled roster brimming with unfamiliar faces.
Penn State must prove that its new scheme, talent and high-profile portal additions can mesh against a Marshall squad looking to play spoiler.

Overview and Storylines
The Nittany Lions turned to former Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell to lead the program, and he brought in 40 transfers — including 24 Cyclones — to reshape the roster while relying on players who followed him to establish early continuity.
Campbell has occasionally come out flat in season-openers, but this year’s squad is arguably his most talented to date.
On the visitor’s sideline, head coach Tony Gibson enters his second year leading the Herd, having successfully sustained offensive production while navigating a challenging 5-7 season in 2025.
On the other side of the ball, the Herd underwent a complete defensive overhaul after ranking near the bottom of the Sun Belt in several categories last season. Having lost several key playmakers to graduation and the transfer portal, Marshall completely rebuilt its defense.
This opener serves as a major measuring stick against a Big Ten program for the Herd, which fell 45-7 at Georgia in its only Power Four test last year.
Matchup and Scheme Breakdown
Penn State’s offense will test a heavily reconstructed Marshall defensive front that lost nearly all of its starters from last year. Linebacker Javae Gilmore stands as the lone returning starter in the front six of the Herd’s 3-3-5 scheme, joined by incoming transfers Kelvon McBride from NC State and Mickel Williams from UTSA.
Expect the Nittany Lions, under the direction of offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser, to employ heavy tight end usage and favor the run against lighter boxes, potentially basing out of 12-personnel.
Conversely, Marshall’s offensive attack is centered around dual-threat quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, a Syracuse transfer, who led the team in rushing yards while maintaining high efficiency in the passing game during his breakout 2025 season.
The Herd will employ a multi-back rotation featuring Jo’Shon Barbie alongside FCS West Georgia transfer TJ Lester. They may test Penn State’s secondary early through quick-rhythm throws to senior wideouts De’Andre Tamarez and Adrian Norton.
Marshall returns cornerback Josh Pierre-Louis and safety Daytione Smith while adding Buffalo transfers Charles McCartherens and Eddie Fleasant III to bolster a secondary that will likely be the weakness of defensive coordinator Brad Lambert’s unit.
Players to Watch
Del Rio-Wilson (7) serves as the engine for Marshall’s offense, using his mobility to extend plays and pick up yards on the ground. One of his primary pass-catchers, tight end Toby Payne (81), came just short of 400 receiving yards with three touchdowns last season and is viewed as one of the top tight ends in the Sun Belt entering the year.
Additionally, right guard Jalen Slappy (70) has potential to be a first-team All-Sun Belt selection, allowing zero sacks and just two quarterback hits across 723 dropbacks the last two seasons.
Defensively, safety Daytione Smith (17) enters his sixth season of college football looking to build off a three-interception campaign a year ago.
Keys to Victory
Penn State: Dominate the line of scrimmage by leveraging running backs and heavy tight end sets to wear down Marshall’s reconstructed front. Lynn’s defense needs to maintain disciplined rush lanes to collapse the pocket without allowing Del Rio-Wilson to create explosive plays during scramble drills.
Marshall: Del Rio-Wilson must make quick, efficient decisions in the passing game to get the ball to perimeter targets Tamarez and Norton before Penn State’s pass rush can close in. Marshall needs to force turnovers to maximize possessions and keep the ball away from the Nittany Lions.
Score Prediction: Penn State 37, Marshall 10
Although Marshall possesses several dynamic players offensively, the Herd’s reconstructed defense will likely be among the worst in the country, giving Penn State a decisive advantage. Expect the Nittany Lions to dominate in the trenches and pull away late in the second half after settling in.
